Comic Genius
Fridays in our office are wear-what-you-like days. Friday just gone I pulled out a t-shirt featuring the comic pairing of Morcambe and Wise - legends in the world of comedy. I had taken it for granted that they were widely known in the world and that others would appreciate and know who they were. I was slightly taken aback, then, when asked by an Australian who they were (the t-shirt does not bear their names, just the title of their signature song). I started quizzing others round the table to find that less people in the group of 15-20 than I have digits on my left hand knew who Eric and Ernie were, never mind any of their work.
Time to find some new people to hang out with, I guess.
That is shocking!
It seems that my colleagues, who are largely Australian, know and love British Comedy and are often found quoting Monty Python and Black Adder (hmmm... Australians, snakes...). I have recently introduced one of them to The Fast Show (specifically Jazz Club).
Just yesterday I was saying to K that it's time to expose them to I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, but explaining Mornington Crescent could be quite a task!

To be 100% fair I should point out that a large proportion of the group were Portuguese, and that a large proportion of the Portuguese weren't alive when Morecambe and Wise were performing. However, I was still slightly perturbed by the idea of people not knowing the names Eric Morcambe and Ernie Wise.
