Rookie Champion

There has been a lot of talk in recent months that the Formula One World Drivers Championship title could be awarded to a rookie for the first time in the history of the Championship. Now I hate to be picky, but technically this isn't the case. Even if Lewis Hamilton does manage to score more than 8 points less than Fernando Alonso1 he will be the second rookie to win the title. You see Giuseppe Farina was the first since technically everyone was a rookie in the first year the Championship was officially a championship.

1Trust me, I've done the complicated maths on this

But, thinking about it a bit more logically... neither were complete rookies anyway... rookies in terms of "first season in F1" maybe... but both were already experienced racing drivers in other respects before entering formula one, having driven in so termed 'lesser' competitions as their careers progressed up to F1 level... I would be a rookie, having never driven in a race of any kind (unless you include bumper cars!!)... but i don't really see them as rookies at all...

Just to add, and clarify... Lewis Hamilton has been driving in competition since the age of 8 when he competed in Karting... he is now 22, that's 16 years of competative racing already! Looked him up on Wiki to check my facts! ;-)

That's a fair point... I remember when I was loitering around the Mini 7 paddock that those drivers who made the jump from Sevens to Miglias1 were not regarded as rookies in the Miglias if they were in Sevens the previous season.

1Seven = 1000cc, semi-slick tyres, 120mph. Miglia = 1300cc, fat slick tyres, 130+mph.

Just to clarify my sister's maths skills there... 8 + 16 = 22

LOL!

Thhhhrrrrpppppp.... daft thing is, i thought to myself... "16, nah that's not right, it's only 14... " but then forgot to change it before i submitted!

Erm... hadn't Farina raced in Formula 1 two years before the world championship?

I guess it comes down to whether you consider Formula 1 to be the same thing before and after it was called the Formula 1 World Championship. I'm being picky. Please feel free to ignore me - I often do!
